Forthcoming Magician Show The Whakatane public will be waiting for the spectacular show in the Grand Theatre put on by ‘Cigam’ the wonder magician, who is stated to be without peer. Look Out Rats !! ! The Borough Council has authorised the purchase of a further supply of rat poison for free distribution amongst residents. A special advertisement will be inserted in this paper when the new stock comes to hand and citizens will be asked to co-operate in an all-out campaign against the rat nuisance.
Enquiry From Ashburton At last meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council a letter was received from Mr J. R. McMillan, Ashburtpn, on behalf of a textile manufacturing company which contemplates commencing business in a town in the North Island. The writer made enquiries respecting the availability of adequate premises, electricity and water supply, transport facilities and the availability later of female labour. The Town Clerk was directed in the matter of reply, and was instructed to mention the old premises previously occupied by the Freezing Company at Piripai.
Further Snooker Challenge The local team to play Rotorua on May 21 next in a further challenge for the inter-room Snooker Challenge Cup, will be as under: T. Morgan, J. Thompson, M. McGarvey, W. Hona, S. Davis, W. Keepa, R. Keesing.
A Question of Advice “I would also like to point out,” said Mr I. Gow in pleading the cause of Edgecumbe being left on its present site, to the Minister of Lands, yesterday, “that although engineering executive officers may give their advice on these matters, it is always the head of a concern, or Board, or Department, which makes the decision, and I think we have the right to stress that point to you.” The point was rather flattened by the Minister’s rejoinder that from his experience the businessman who habitually flew in the face of genuine expert advice and opinions, didn’t last long.”
Attention Edgecumbe Ladies! The ladies of Edgecumbe will be interested to learn that during the long period taken by the meeting of residents making its representations to the Minister of Lands yesterday, in Bell’s Hall, a small but extremely active young rat made exactly fifteen journeys from the ladies dressing room to the supper room on the opposite side. It returned just as often with a crust or some sort of food and deposited it under the large cupboard near the door. What about a ‘Rat Prevention Week’, or shall we shift the whole township and leave the rat population to puzzle out where we’ve gone?
