RACING NEWS & VIEWS

In Both Northerns Master Meruit and As Required, both Grand National winners, are nominated for the Great Northern Hui’dles and Steeples. Return of Te Hinemoa The Mr Standfast—Prodice mare, Te Hinemoa, quite a leading performer in the 1943, 1944 and 1945 seasons, was retired from the turf after the Auckland Easter meeting 1945, but is now in work again at Te Awamutu. Now rising seven, and perfectly sound in tvind and limb, she is likely to add to her already fine winning total, although she may not strike her best form until next spring. Over the Battens

Royal Greek, one of Hawke’s Bay’s best gallopers on the flat, is now being schooled over the battens at Hastings. He is showing aptitude in the new department, and should run prominently during the winter. A Trentham Team Trainer W. Bryce, of Trentham, whose team consisting of Tuis, Tutere, Zealander & Hormuz has been “in the money” at Ellerslie lately, has decided to stay there for the Great Northern fixture in June.

A Spectacular Jumper The brilliant lepper Brantome, is treating Ellerslie early morning onlookers to fine displays over the obstacles just now. For the Great Northern meeting in June he will be more forward in racing condition than at Easter and this means that the opposition will surely have their work cut out to catch him. Retired

Sweet Biscuit, a Railway Handicap winner, has been retired from the turf. Both owner and trainer have exercised a lot of patience with the Broiefort—Spearform mare, for ast season she started on nine occasions without a win, and this year has failed to race prominently.

The Challenge Stakes Sleepy Fox is to contest the Northern Challenge Stakes to be run at Ellerslie in June. It is a weight' for age event in which the Foxbi'idge representative should show to advantage. The Gloucester Cup •

The 1946 Gloucester Cup is to be run next month at the Dunedin winter fixture. For next season the race has been allotted to the Waikato Racing Club, so gentlemen riders of which there are many in the Auckland Province, have ample time to get fit for a race 12 months hence. A Daughter of Gay Rosette The latest addition to N. Cunningham’s team at Takanini is the Foxbridge—Gay Rosette filly, bred and owned by Mr Norman Wade. If she has inherited the galloping capability of her dam, she will receive the attention of a noble army of punters. A Winning Veteran The Southland owned Platform was having his 73rd race when he won the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill. Starting as a two year old he has been racing for seven successive seasons without a break, and is considered as good now as ever. The Leading Sire Foxbridge is the leading sire of the season with two year olds, which have won £5812.

Allotted Lengthy Spells The Taranaki owned but Ellerslie trained Broiedame and Eastern Charm have been turned out for a lengthy spell. The first named may not be seen out under colours again until late in the year. Secured for Hawera

At the Sydney Thoroughbred Sales the New Zealand-bred Gold Rod was secured by Mr Russell, of Hawera, at lOOOgns, generally considered to be quite a bargain price. An Early Winner The first winter steeplechase of the season was won by the Illumination —Mintour gelding, Political Boy, the event being the Eg'mont Steeplechase. Interest will now be centred in the Great Northern Steeplechase to be run on June 3 for which Master Meruit, Cold Cape, Kilmanagh and Ballynetty are the early favourites.

Improving The Vaais—Nassau Lady mare, La Fillette, is now being trained by her owner, Mr A. Rowan, and is showing improvement week by week. She gallops well on heavy tracks, so should race prominently during the winter.

The Gaming Commission Mr H. F. O’Leary, K.C. of Wellington, will appear for the N.Z. Racing Conference before the Gaming Commission.
