HOSPITAL RATE
JOLT FOR BOROUGH £3OO INCREASE “The Hospital rate for the year will he sid, which represents a £3OO increase on last year's levy,” said His Worship the Mayor at last Monday’s meeting' of the Borough Council. He added that at this rate the Borough could have undertaken the whole of its £20,000 water improvement scheme. The Hospital Board notified that the levy for 1946 had been fixed at £2767 2s (£367 capital and £2399 maintenance). It was ponted out that by far the greater percentage of the maintenance cost had been due to the statutory increase in the salaries of the nursing staff. Cr Sullivan outlined the report of the Parliamentary Select Committee which had yet to be submitted to Parliament for debate. He described the action taken by the Maungonui County and mentioned the fact that the Government had stepped in and endeavoured to collect the rate when the Council had refused to levy it.
It was decided to write the Government enquiring what it intended doing with regard to the commit-jaeiS-Jg£Qinmendations.
