Speedy Transit
An example of the speedy transit of an overseas letter, which apparently by some coincidence happened to just catch each mail on the point of leaving, was demonstrated recently to a local resident. The person in question posted a. communication to Scotland on April the sth, and this was received on April 15. The reply was sent off the following day, April 16, and 10 days later, on April 26, it was received in Whakatane.
Ohope Spotlight Gaiety presided at last Saturday’s meeting of dancing enthusiasts at the Cabaret when numerous’couples sought entertainment amidst perfect surroundings. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs Whittaker, Mr and Mrs Hay, Mr and Mrs Robin (Auckland), Mr and Mrs Lees (Matata), Mr and Mrs Wight (Matata), Mr and Mrs McCullock (Morrinsville). Other young ladies were Misses Leita and Hazel Thomason, Dorothy Stewart, Inez Quigg, Joan Anderson, Nel and Phil Rivett, Nova Ranby, Thora Moore, Jean Laughton, Gay Burt, Ngaire Eivers and Miss Brosnahan of Auckland.
Rod and Gun Club’s Smoko That keenly anticipated event of the sporting year, the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club’s Annual ‘Smoko’ and game supper takes place next Saturday. From reports we gather that this year the executive has decided upon adding a Scottish flavour to the proceedings, and we hear rumours of the full ‘haggis ceremony’ and the playing in of the game dishes by a brace o’ pipers who have been specially selected 'for their brawn and staying powers.
