WATCH STOLEN
MAORI GIRL’S LAPSE ADMITTED TO PROBATION A Maori girl, Lidya M. Rakuraku, appeared before the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with stealing a lady’s wristlet watch valued at £5. The offence occurred at Rotorua on January 24, 1945, accused pleadifig guilty. Mr E. ]L. Walton S.M. was on the Bench.
Sergeant Farrell stated that at the time the offence occurred, accused was employed on the staff of the Regent Hotel, Rotorua. Her duties took her into the room of one of the guests who later discovered that her watch was missing. Accused was noticed wearing the watch although she had changed the strap. When questioned, she denied the offence, but the watch had been identified. She had since married, and was at present living with her husband at Waimana.
Accused was convicted, and admitted to probation for a period of six months.
