Local and General

Possibility of Subsidy Speaking to the public meeting last Wednesday evening for the purpose of forming an Aero Club in Whakatane, Mr Whitworth stated that with regard to the A.T.C. he understood that there was a strong prospect of subsidy coming to any Aero Club providing provision was made by such club for the purpose of training A.T.C. personnel.

New Books At the monthly meeting of the Public Library Committee the following books were selected: “And After Dark” K. Wallace; “Glory Hill Farm” C. Reynolds; “I’ll Say She Does” P. Cheyney; “The Widening Pool” Jane England; “Superintendent Nurse” H. D. Roylston; “Horned Pigeon” Geo. Millar.

Hospital Staff Quarters A letter from the Industrial Union covering the porters employed by the "Whakatane Hospital, was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Board. The writer stated that complaints had been received to the effect that the quarters provided for the porters lacked ordinary amenities and were cold and damp. The iioard admitted that there was room for complaints and that if they were fully substantiated, would be willing to effect improvements. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to investigate and report back.

Sport of Gliding Mr Stewart must have converted many aero enthusiasts to the sport of gliding at last Wednesday’s Aero Club meeting, if his own enthusiasm was any criterion. “Gliding,” he said, “is a sport which is thrilling cheap and safe. New Zealand is very backward in respect of this very fine sport, which has found widespread popularity in America and on the Continent. It has been taken on by quite elderly persons and I sincerely trust that the new Whakatane Club will do its utmost to encourage and stimulate interest in it.”
