BAR NOW WORKABLE
RECENT FLUSH CLEARS CHANNEL
SAND BLOCKAGE DISPERSED
Harbour Board officials who have been closely watching the silting up of the Whakatane bar with no little concern, were greatly relieved yesterday to learn from the Harbourmaster (Capt. G. Carey) that in his soundings during the afternoon the depth at high tide was 7ft 6in, which brings it nearly back to the average depth of Bft. The clearance of the obstructing sand was directly due to the flush of water down the Whakatane river on Monday and Tuesday following the heavy rainfall. A further flooding of similar volume is > likely to remove the bank entirely or to even give the bar a greater depth, which in good periods has been known to be great as 10 feet.
