WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT EDGECUMBE The April meeting of the Edgecumbe Women’s Institute was held in the form of a Scotch afternoon, and was very capably presided over by Mrs G. K. Pearse. There was a good attendance of members and four new members, namely Mesdames Hanright,' Green, Dally and Miss Shaw, were enrolled and welcomed.

The secretary, Miss Blair, read the minutes of the previous meeting and the correspondence. A letter was received from the Otakiri Women’s Institute inviting members to their Birthday Dinner to be held this month, and many members expressed a wish to attend.

The remits for the annual meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation were fully discussed and voted upon. Mrs Crang read ah inspiring and friendly letter from the Dominion Federation President, Mrs Barnicoat.

Mrs Burgess gave a short report on the Eisteddfod, recently held in Whakatane, and congratulated Sister Institutes on the splendid a?.ray of work shown.

Mrs Pearse presented pretty posies to Mrs Burgess and Mrs List, and thanked them both for the work they had done for Edgecumbe at the Eisteddfod. She also presented bank books to Baby Roberts and Baby Russell.

The roll call ‘Subscriptions and a Tablespoonful of Tea and Sugar’ resulted in enough tea and sugar to last for several meetings. Mrs Anderson had a very keen and interested audience' for her demonstration of smocking and many youngsters frocks should benefit from her instructions. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Wilson, List, Jackson and Robb.

Monthly competition results were as follows: Gazania, Mrs Blair 1, Mrs Carter 2, Mrs Newbiggen S. Best flower, Mrs Carter 1, Mrs List and Miss Teasdale 2, Mrs Smith 3. Fob for coat, Mrs S. Pearse 1, Mrs King 2, Mrs Malpas 3. Scones, Mrs Burgess 1, Mrs Blair 2, Mrs Thomson 3. Onions, Mrs Teasdale 1, Mrs Blair 2, Mrs Burgess 3.
