FOOTBALL

THE 1945 SEASON A BRIEF REVIEW At, the annual meeting of the Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union which took place in the County Council Chambers on Tuesday evening, the President (Mr W. H. Henderson) in his report on the year’s activities, stated as follows:

In presenting the report for the past season wliich was frought with difficulties and anxiety for the Executive I have to state that the standard of play was much improved obviously through the return of playex-s from overseas who again took up the game. This year I hope to note a much improved season both from the standpoint of play and finance. The balance sheet will show the position the Union is in. I would ask delegates to search their districts for trophies which were won by their clubs in the past. Several Cups and Shields are not in the hands of the Union officials and I would ask that the trophies be returned as soon as possible. I must thank the members of the executive for their assistance in.the past and hope the members will extend the same wholehearted support to the members of the new executive.

Our challenge for the Te HurunuiApanui Shield was not won by us, but when one considers that only six of the selected team took the field on the day I think our boys did remarkably well. An 'epidemic of influenza took toll of our players. The Junior Reps, likewise were not successful in their challenge. Now, however, with the co-operation of all I feel sure that this season will >rove a good one.
