Manawahe Roads
The Manawahe branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union wrote last meeting drawing the attention ' of the County Council to the distressingly bad state of the Manawahe roads, which, it was claimed had never been worse. It was requested that an immediate inspection be made, danger signs erected, and a grader put on to cover the worst patches. The matter was referred to Cr Burt and the engineer to report. What Ho, What Ho The attention of parents will have no doubt by this time been forcibly attracted to the fact that the usual Peter the Whaler column was miss- " ing (if they had not discovered it for themselves!) from Friday’s issue. Unfortunately we, the editorial staff, found ourselves in a position'such that we were totally unable to supply the Beacon’s most popular (according to P.T.W.) feature, for that old reprobate has sallied forth onto the Pacific once again, and the only information we have concerning his whereabouts, is contained in a note which the postman found on the table. It reads as follows: “Butch and I have gone to a reunion dinner of the crew of the old barque ‘Fallingapart’ at the Chatham Islands. Back next week, give Butinsky and Peterkih some more milk. P.T.W. (P.S. Tell my crew I have thought up some brand new competitions for them for when I re- - turn. In the meantime, last week’s winners are: Doreen Barton, Valerie Linwood, Johnny Wairua, Robert Gattsche. These sailors may collect their tickets right away.)-
