WAIMANA GALA DAY

GYMKHANA SEASON CONCLUDES GOOD DISTRICT SUPPORT Horses and competitors from all parts of the Bay of Plenty attended Waimana’s Gala Day on Saturday, the function which marked the final in the round of gymkhanas for the district. Although right up until 8 o’clock on Saturday morning, the committee entertained fears as to whether the weather would permit the event to proceed, the chose to smile on proceedings, at least until 4 p.m. when a drizzling rain set in. By that time, however, most of the evtents had been run off, and the programme was completed later in the afternoon. The public response was excellent, and the committee responsible for the organisation was well rewarded for its efforts, over £l2O being taken at the gate.

Chopping events once again held orominent place in the lengthy "o gramme of activities, as did also the athletics, which, run under the auspices of the N.Z.A.A.A. attracted competition of a high standard. Spectators evinced their interest n the many and varied ring events,

Once again the ladies of Waimana rose admirably to the occasion and staffed stalls which offered many bargains particularly in the way of oroduce to the number of housewives we noticed purchasing their week’s provisions. Tea and. cakes md a Maori hangi provided suffi:~nt menu to suit all tastes, all be-

ing well patronised during the luncheon and morning and afternoon tea periods. In his own inimitable manner Mr Freddie Burt commentated on the proceedings via the loud speaker, whilst the Whakatane Pipe Band served also to liven the atmosphere with a selection of popular Scottish airs.
