TOURIST FACILITIES
OUR DISTRICT ATTRACTIONS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHEME Mr Fred Abbott who usually bubbles over with enthusiasm in any activity he is associated with submitted to the Chamber of . Commerce last Thursday evening a number of suggestions which he contends would make for a brighter Whakatane from the tourists point of view. His suggestions were most constructive and will be endorsed by all who read them.
Few people he contended, knew of the availability of fishing trips on any suitable day during the summer by the S.S. Port Whakatane for an outlay of £6. This should be more publicised. Again he suggested round trips (a) to Galatea via Walohou, the return journey to be made via Rotorua and through the Lake route back home, (b) shorter trip to Waimana via Taneatua and the gorge, and home through Wainui and Ohope Beach, (c) trips to Mount Edgecumbe which could be climbed by the more vigorous, (d) trips to the Matahina plantations and back again to the Paper Mills which could also be inspected. In all these trips luncheon could be served at midday and the parties brought back to the borough in the evening. Regular trips to White Island were also mentioned.
The meeting strongly favoured the idea, the chairman (Mr H. G. Warren) mentioning that the Road Services Office had expressed a willingness to organise any of the trips mentioned as sbon as it was requested. Mr Brabant claimed that the best way to see White Island was by air. 5 the Aero Club were formed it night be able to arrange such flights for passengers. The whole matter was referred to the executive for investigation.
