R.S.A. CARNIVAL
FINAL NIGHT AT EDGECUMBE
SUCCESSFUL FREE DANCE A very successful free (?) dance took place in the Edgecumbe Hall on Saturday evening after the race meeting at Te Teko, as a final effort to the R.S.A. Princess Carnival. Some 400 patrons packed the floor, and the dance was without doubt, one of the best supported functions which took place in the district on Saturday night. As a result of it, over £l2O rolled into the coffers of Princess Kathleen.
The Premier Dance Band supplied excellent music for the occasion, whilst Mr O. Laurie filled the role of M.C.
The floor was in first class condition, whilst the supper was a tribute to Edgecumbe’s hospitality, and to the ladies who so capably managed its preparation and serving. •*
Highlights of the evening were the progress reports of the positions of the various princesses. Results were phoned through to a central committee office at Free’s Tearooms, from each individual district, and progress reports distributed in return.
In the hall itself, many competitions of all descriptions were held, and the results were announced shortly before midnight. Before the last 'dance, Princess Kathleen was introduced to those present. She very ably thanked her supporters for their efforts, and extended her appreciation also to her committee which had organised many functions on her behalf.
Mr Charlie Thompson, Chairman of the Committee also spoke, extending thanks to the public for their support, and congratulating Princess Kathleen on the substantial sum which had been raised in her favour.
The Final Results At the conclusion of the dance, the Princesses, Chairmen and Secretaries of committees from each district with the exception of those from the Borough who were engaged at functions of their own assembled at Free’s Tearooms, together with a large number of supporters. When the final results had been received from each centre, the position of each Princess was worked out and the result of the County Carnival announced by Mr T. H. Mackin, Chairman of the Central Committee.
Following this, the votes of the two queens, were augmented by those of the*, remaining princesses until the value of each attained 1/-. These were then aligned with those of the leading queen from the Borough, and the final result announced by Mr L. H. Brown. Sustained applause greeted the announcement that Princess Josephine (Matata) had topped the poll with Princess Ellen (Te Teko) second, and Princess Pam (Young Veterans) third. In conclusion, Mr Brown on behalf of the R.S.A. extended his warmest thanks to the public who had made the Carnival such a success, and said that the surn of money realised, which had exceeded all expectations, would be very gratefully received by the Returned Services’ Association.
