LOCAL AERO CLUB MOOTED BUSINESSMEN PROMISE SUPPORT
A deputation headed by Mr C. L. Jordan waited on the Chamber, of Commerce on Thursday evening seeking its support in the formation of an Aero Club, for Whakatane, which it was hoped would be formed in the near future. When all had spoken, the president, Mr H. G. Warren, assured the deputation of the Camber’s fullest co-op-eration in any move which might be made towards the creation of an Aero Club.
Mr Jordan claimed that with so many ex-Air Force members now ‘demobilised’ and living in Whakatane there was a marvellous opportunity at the present time to make a start and form a club. There were many qualified fliers who were capable of giving instruction and he considered with Opotiki and Tauranga in possession of landing fields it was high time Whakatane awoke to the importance of aviation.
He was strongly supported by Mr Magnus Lennie who maintained that with aviation tied up so much with the immediate future, Whakatane should at least take steps to lay the foundation of a club so that it could be ready to advance when the inevitable development took place.
Messrs. Chapman and Johnston also spoke in strong support of the scheme and it was intimated that a public meeting would be called in the near future.
