10 PER CENT DESTROYED

One in every ten of the Church of England buildings in the London Diocese were totally destroyed by air raids during the war. Eightyseven per cent, were damaged; only 266 out of a total of 2258 church buildings escaping unharmed. The term “church buildings” includes churches, vicarages, halls and other ecclesiastical structures. If only churches proper be counted, 91 of a total of 701 were totally destroyed; 533 were damaged, 78 of them severely. Only 77 churches escaped scot free. These facts are made known in the report of the Reorganisation Committee just published. They make plain the gravity of the task confronting the churches.
