PROSPECTIVE WORKS

REGIONAL COMMISSIONER’S

ENQUIRY

Writing the Harbour Board the District Engineer, Regional Commissioner of Works, Hamilton, advised that the Ministry of Works was endeavouring to obtain a comprehensive view of the construction industry in New Zealand and hoped to devise a technique which would ensure prosecution of Public Works in time of surplus labour and not in competition with other employers. The secretary (Mr C. G. Lucas) reported that the District Engineer, Hamilton, had been advised that the Board did not contemplate any extensive works programme within the next two years. The Board, however, did not desire to be bound by this statement in that it might be that circumstances will alter which would necessitate in its engaging in a further reclamation and roading programme. It was anticipated that the Board’s expenditure on the maintenance of river training groynes, wharves and buildings, over the next two years, would approximate £2OOO- - annually.
