WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE APRIL MEETING The first meeting of the year opened with Mrs Crozier in the chair assisted by Mrs J. King Jnr. the new secretary. The Institute song was sung as usual and all members repeated the Aspirations. An unusual number of apologies was received and the attendance was 49.

At this juncture opportunity was taken to present Mesdames Moran and Hannah with dainty shoulder sprays as small tokens of appreciation of their work over a number of years as Lady Galway Sewing Circle convenor and Institute Secretary respectively. The committee have again decided to include the Golden Thread in the programme and this year it is to be readings on 'Women of all Lands" commencing with Rumania.

A demonstration on the making of a hanging basket of Cascade Chrysanthemums was given by the gardening convenor, Mrs Fennell, and members found that it was an interesting and simple procedure, Next on the agenda was a reading on Lilliums by Mrs Murphy and then members' garden problems, in the form of a roll call, were answered by Mrs Fennell. Questions were numerous and the penny fine for 'no answer' realised only a very small amount.

Mrs Caisley then brightened the meeting with a short talk on her stay in New York given in her usual breezy style.

Prior to afternoon tea the choir was heard in an enjoyable rendering of 'Come to the Ball', one of the competition items in the recent Eisteddfod.

During ,the Social Half Hour a new departure in the form of a short quiz was undertaken and proved popular and instructive. The points prizes for the 1945-46 competitions were presented by Mrs Crozier to the winners, Mrs Hannah 1 and Mrs Fennell 2.

Results, of the April competitions were as follows: lib jam jar of autumn berries and leaves for effect, Mrs Moran 1; Mrs Fennell 2. Best flower, Mrs Fennell 1; Mrs N. Martin 2. Three onions, Mrs Fennell 1, Mrs Stewart 2.

The meeting closed with the National Anthem after the usual Circle announcements had been given out.
