POROPORO SETTLER'S COMPLAINT
RAISING OF ROAD BLAMED Claiming that he had paid no less than £534 County rates and £620 drainage rates over the past 21 years, a ratepayer, Mr J. Langenberger, wrote the Whakatane County Council at its last meeting pointing out that as a result of the raising of Station Road his farm was more subject to flood than ever before. He asked for relief from, the flood threat.
The writer pointed out that his hay bad been riuned as a result of floods in the past and that by raising Station Road the volume of water was- going to be increased in the Waioho stream, which overflowed on to his farm.. He objected strongly to being rated for. -works which he claimed were directly injuring himself.
Cr Butler said that the water which, invaded. Mr Langenberger's farm came from, the: Whakatane River and not- from the Waioho as he alleged. The chairman 1 could see: no; other alternative other than by raising the level of* Statiom Road to. prevent it from being, submerged! during flood periods. It was decided to writer pointing out. that the: flooding' on; the writer's property was not. from the source he thought;, that the Council had been forced to maintain! Station road and that it declined to put in a spillway as: requested, ii* ftfe writers letter..
