REPARATIONS

ENEMY PLANT AVAILABLE NONE SUITABLE FOR COUNTY In a letter to the Whakatane County Council the Department of Industries and Commerce advised that New Zealand was entitled, as part of the reparations to be made by Germany and Japan, to a proportion of selected plant, machine tools etc. and the Council was asked to advise of its requirements.

The County Engineer reported that the circular did not give an itemised schedule of plant available, and in any case there was no mention in the circular of road-making plant. The Council had no substantial requirements outside road-mak-ing plant and in the circumstances it was considered the Council would not be interested in the factory and other machinery which was available.

The chairman commented that he did not think any of the machinery would be useful to the Council.

Debt Cases Judgment was entered for plaintiff in the following cases before Mr E. L. Walton S.M. in the Whakatane Court yesterday: Sharp v Cameron, £22 ss, costs £4 Is 6d; Elizabeth Boon v Wm. Capperley order for possession and arrears of rent amounting to £l7 ss, costs £4 8s; Wallace Supplies v V. Paul £l2 5s 7d, costs £3 9s. Judgment Summons: D. Dean v R. Freeburn £l2 12s 4d (order to pay at rate of £1 per month).

Alleviating Flood Danger In an effort to alleviate the danger of flooding in the Allandale area, the Wainui te Whara Stream has been completely widened and deepened from end to end. The work has been well executed, and residents in that part of the town should now have no worries as regards flooding in the event of a cloudburst, or a long spell of heavy rain. The bulldozer performing the work for the Borough Council is at present working on the mudflats behind the rubbish tip, and is engaged upon

widening the Apanui drain entrance.
