W.D.F.U.

PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Provincial Executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in Murupara on March 6, 1946. There were present Mesdames Grey, in the chair, L. B. Smith, Jamieson, Barr, Haultain, Brizzle, McKenzie, Prince, Wilson, A. E. Hill, Gibbs, Miss Haultain and members of the Murupara-Galatea branch.

The president welcomed delegates and said she appreciated the regular attendance at Provincial meetings of the Murupara delegates, now that she herself had travelled the long road they had to come. The Creed was repeated, and the secretary read the minutes of the last meeting. The following remits from Awakeri branch were handed in for discussion, and were passed: (1) That the Government be urged to remove Sales Tax from children’s clothing and household appliances. (2) That in view of the shortage of accommodation in country homes, and the

absence of domestic help for country women, the Government be urged to make the provision of houses for single country teachers their future and immediate policy. (3) In view of the fact that the Division is expected under the new Domestic Aid Scheme to provide Housekeepers to buiit up areas, the rule stating that the nearest branch be liable for the first 30/- be revised. In necessitous cases, the finances of the nearest branch would break down; thus denying adequate help to women in these areas.

Two remits from Murupax-a-Gal-atea branch were passed as follows: (1) That the Division views with concern the action of the Health Department in leaving isolated country districts without a District Nurse during the absence of the Resident Nurse, and asks that temporary nurses be supplied in the meantime. (2) As the policy of Rabbits Boards in the past has disregarded need for married quarters for rabbiters, the Division asks that in future, Boards provide such quarters. Mrs Hill proposed that a Housekeeper Fund be established, and that proceeds from tlih stall and competi- . tion held at the meeting be given to this fund. Seconded by Mrs Wilson and carried. The proceeds from the stall amounted to £2 6s 9d from the competition 18s and from the lunch 19s. The president warmly thanked the Murupara-Galatea branch for its hospitality during the day, and also for its generosity in handing over to the Housekeeper; Fund the money (£1) it usually cost their delegates in travelling to the Provincial Executive meeting. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.'
