THEFT OF MONEY
OFFENCE AT MATATA MAORI SENTENCED Edward Patrick, a Maori youth «of Matata, appeared before 'Messrs. G. A. Brabant and J. King, J.P.s, in the Whakatane Court on Thursday, charged with stealing the sum of 30/from Lionel Freeman, at Matata on March 18. Accused pleaded guilty. ’
Sergeant Farrell stated that on the .evening of the date in question, pictures were shown at Matata. At half-time, Mr Freeman went to his shop, which was in the vicinity of the theatre. Here, he discovered that the sum of 30/- was missing. The police were notified, and several suspects, including accused who admitted the offence, were questioned. Some of the money was found in accused’s possession, and the remainder was discovered in a tin, buried in the back yard of the place where he resided.
Remarking that accused had a substantial, list of previous convictions, the Bench passed a sentence of one month’s imprisonment in the Whakatane gaol.
