RUGBY FOOTBALL
NEW WHAKATANE CLUB FORMED RECENT MEETING
An open meeting was held in the Borough Council Chambers recently to form an organised Rugby Football Club within the Borough of Whakatane, with the object of fostering the game in the town especially amongst the younger players. The meeting was well attended, the majority of members being old players and supporters of the Star and Old Boys Clubs of pre-war days. Mr Bert Norman was elected to the chair.
After several members had represented their views it was decided that the club be called the United Football Club. Club colours were left in abeyance owing to the difficulty of procuring jerseys, the matter to be gone into later in the season and a definite colour settled upon The subscriptions for the season were decided as Senior 10/-; Junior 7/6.
Before the election of officers for the ensuing year took place the chairman pointed out the necessity for appointing members who would take an interest in the club and help to the best of their ability in making the objects of the club a success.
The following officers were elected:—
Patron: Mr G. Lodge. President: Mr B. Norman. Vice-presidents: Mr L. Roach,- Mr J. Denham, Mr H. W. Sharp, Mr C. G. Pritchard, Mr R. Woolliams, Mr A. Morpeth, Mr N. Bremner, Mr L. Ormond, Mr H. McGougan, Mr C. L. Hudson, Mr D. S. Wilson, Mr R. C. Wilson, Mr M. Cummings, Mr J. D. Rivett. Club Captain: Mr B. Norman. Secretary-Treasurer: Mr D. J. Wilson. Coach: Mr H. McGougan and Mr B. Norman. Committee: Messrs. R. Rowson, H. G. Cutler, I. Woolliams, C. Reid, D. Boon, D. O. Stewart. Auditor: Mr A. Britten. Delegates to Whakatane Rugby Union: President and Secretary. General Business
The secretary was instructed to try and arrange a match with one of the other teams in the Whakatane or Rangitaiki Unions before the start of the season. As soon as the season was under way practices will be held at least once a week, time and place for same to be arranged by the committee. All intending players were instructed to get in touch with any member of the committee.
In-conclusion the president wished the players a successful season and thanked all those present for attending.
