♦» WHAKATANE BOWLING CLUB TOURNAMENT RESULTS • Seventeen teams from Whakatane, Taneatua and Te Puke Bowling Club competed in a tournament held on the Whakatane Club’s greens at Apanui during the weekend. The following were the results— Section ‘A’ Henderson 5% wins; Sloane 5; Berg 5; Lawn (Taneatua) 4; Cuthbert (Te Puke) 4; Caisley 4; Murphy 2\\ Shaw 2. Section ‘B’ Smoljan 6 wins; Oswald 6; Hurst (Taneatua) 4; Foster (Taneatua) 3; Hayward 3; Currah 3; Loane 2|; Howat 2\; Hearle (Taneatua) 0. Section Play Oswald beat Smoljan. Final Davies, A. King, Horne and Oswald (s) 8 beat Spong, West, Dixon and Henderson (s) 6. Saturday’s Play
The following results were recorded from Saturday’s play at the Whakatane Club’s greens at Apanui, when the fine weather attracted a large number of bowiers to the rinks:—
West, Pearson and Littlejohn (s) 25 beat R. C. Wilson, Middlemas and Henderson (s) 13; Gerring, Baxter, Mclsaac and Loane 26 beat Compton, R. Gerring, Drube and Harris 13; Anstis, J. Rutherford, C. A. Head and Oswald 19 beat Chamberlain, Dainton, Shalders and Chamberlain 14; Hay, Campbell, H. L. King and
Caisley 21 beat Sumner, Topp, Alexander and Sloane 17; Riddell, Grant and Murphy 22 beat Hollis, Murphy, G. Head and Hellyar 10; Sims, Bigelo.w and Currah 28 beat Wilkinson, Dixon and Howat 17. Smith Stars Comer, Butler, Martin and Shaw (s) (holders) 11 lost to Smith, Good, Berg and Darvill (s) challengers) 26.
TANEATUA BOWLING TOURNEY ASSISTING R.S.A. APPEAL
The Taneatua bowling green presented an animated scene at the weekend when a tournament sponsored by the local club was held to raise funds to further Princess Nancy’s candidature in the R.S.A. Queen Carnival Appeal. Seventy-two bowlers from Rotorua, Opotiki, Whakatane and Taneatua took part and some good bowling resulted. Morning and afternoon tea and luncheon was served by a commiltee of ladies under Mrs N. Semmers. Prizes were donated by Mr G. I. Middlemas and Mr J. Goodhew. Results were as under— Section A: Morpeth, Riddell, Butler and Berg (s) (Whakatane) 6 wins Section B: Alexander, Davies, Anderson and Howat 6 wins. In the play-off Berg’s team defeated Howat’s team by 7 games to 6. The consolation prize (better known as the “booby” prize) award-
ed the team with the smallest number of games was tied for by Section A Soldiers’ Hospital team (Rotorua) and Citizens (Opotiki) with one game each. In the play-off Citizens won the game and the Soldiers’ team were the popular winners. At the conclusion of play and after speeches by Mr Lawn (Taneatua President) and visitors, Princess Nancy presented the prizes to the winning teams.
