WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WHAKATANE BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Methodist Hall on Tuesday, March 5. Mrs Crozier presided over a fair attendance of members, and the meeting opened with the Institute song, the Aspirations following. The thought for the day was, “If you see your shadow remember and pray. The sun is still shining but your in the way.” Apologies were received from Mesdames Armstrong, Dodds, Drube, Sims, Smith, Petty, Murphy, Teasdale and Zinsli. An invitation was received from the Red Cross for members of the Women’s Institute to attend the opening of the new hall.
Proposed delegates for the Council meeting were Mrs Attwood and Mrs King Jun. Two new members were enrolled, I Mrs Barker and Mrs Robinson. jj The garden party held at Miss I Ramson’s residence last month was | reported as having been a success. I Mrs Carter sang “So Deep is the j Night” and “Trees” in a very charm- | ing manner. A request for Roll Call I suggestions for the new programme I was well responded to. J Funds for the year from the Arts |
and Crafts showed a good .profit. It 1 was proposed by Mrs Print that the |j money go towards the Building I Fund. Mrs Fennell’s report showed I that the profits from the Gardening jj Circle were also well worth while ] and these also will go to the Build- if ing Fund. j Mrs Sutcliffe gave her report on j the soldiers parcels and Mrs Comer 1[ reported on the returning of wool li and garments made. | Mrs Moran’s report on the Galway j Guild was very good 4500 garments | having been sent. j
The committee for the forthcoming year was elected, there being four new members.
The competitions for the day were won as follows: (A) Apple chutney, Mrs Hannah 1, Mrs King Snr. 2. (B) Three Astors, Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Fennell 2. (C) Three Beetroot, Mrs Rushbrook 1, Mrs Wallace 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses and the National Anthem brought a very interesting meeting to a close.
MEETING AT TE TEKO ■ The monthly meeting of the Te Teko Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held during the early part of March. The president, Mrs Pryor, presided. Owing to the inclement weather the attendance was small.
After the reading of the Creed, business was attended to Mrs Smith then gave a report on the Provincial meeting held at Murupara. Mrs Hallett gave a demonstration of making a shoulder spray. Mention was made of the annual meeting to be held on the second Tuesday next month when a full attendance of members is requested. Afternoon tea was then served bring ing a very happy afternoon to a close.
