WELCOME HOME
LOCAL PRESBYTERIAN GATHERING
Knox Church, Whakatane, officially welcomed home the men and women of its congregation who have been serving with the armed forces at a. social evening held in the Caledonian Hall last Thursday. The ladies had gone to considerable trouble to decorate the hall, and as a result of their efforts an attractive seting was provided for the gathering. The hall was well filled and with items, games, and competitions the evening proved very enjoyable. Songs rendered by Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Rushbrook, Mr Watson and Dr. Cole, a glee by -the choir, and piping items by Mr Bell and band members were greatly appreciated.
On behalf of the congregation, Mr Bell welcomed the returned men and women, emphasising how splendidly they had performed their task, and in what high regard they were held. He urged them not to forget that they needed the Church and that the Church needed them.
In memory of those who had not returned the assemly stood in silence for one minute. Rev. also spoke, reminding his audience that although the war was over, there was still much remaining to be done to ensure the kind of world we should like.
Mr C. F. Thomas replied on . behalf of the returned men, thanking the congregation for their welcome. A tasty supper served by the ladled brought a pleasant evening to a close.
