Rural Fire Protection

Fire service reorganisation and fire protection proposals were examined at a meeting of Ward 6 of the New Zealand Counties’ Association, consisting of the counties of Whakatane, Tauranga, Rotorua and Opotiki. The Government inspector of fire brigades was present and amplified the Government proposals. It was resolved that the suggested fire service reorganisation legislation should be permissive and not mandatory in its application to county councils and rural areas, and that county costs be a first charge on any funds payable to the insured by the insurance companies, or, failing there being insurance moneys available, a charge on assets, including land, whether European or native, the property of the person receiving the fire protection service.
