Both Wrists Fractured Falling from a tafik stand yesterday afternoon, Mr A. C. Wilson, of Taneatua, fractured both wrists, and was admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital. His condition today is reported to be satisfactory.
Inter-Island Ferry Radio Service Commencing Monday the 18th inst radio telegrams may be forwarded to the “Arahura” and “Matangi” whilst engaged on the WellingtonNelson ferry service at the reduced rate of 2d a word with a minimum charge as for six words.
Fingers Caught in Car Door Two year’s old Alfred Tebbutt, son of Mrs D. Tebbutt, Taneatua, suffered a particularly painful accident on Saturday, when his fingers were jammed in a car door. He was admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital the same day, and is now reported to be progressing satisfactorily.
Return Snooker Challenge This evening at Mr J. Hanwright’s billiard saloon, the Strand, a team from the Opotik'i room which held the Billiards Ltd. Snooker Challenge Cup until Whakatane lifted it some months ago will play a return challenge match, in an effort to recover it. The following team will represent Whakatane: T. Morgan, F. Hona, S. Davis, R. Keesing, J. Thompson, Y. Keepa and J. Hohapata.
Welcome Home Dance A Welcome Home Dance will be held in the Caledonian Hall on Wednesday next 20th March and all servicemen (Borough and County) who have returned in recent months are invited to be present. The Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry), the County Chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) and the President of the R.S.A. (Mr L. H. Brown) will be present to extend an official welcome on behalf of their organisations and it is hoped that a large number of servicemen will be able to attend. Over 100 men have returned to the district since Xmas.
Junior Snooker Cup A substantial sum of money has been donated by Whakatane snooker players, towards a cup which will be held for competition by Junior teams. Conditions governing play for this Cup will be decided at a general meeting of players in the near future.
Watches More Plentiful Noticeable in the windows of jewellers shops now is the number of watches offered for sale. Not so long ago, a good wristlet watch was impossible to procure, but apparently the situation is easing some-* what, although we learn that there is still room for it to grow a good deal better.
The Marvels of Science
A Scout on his way to be examined for the Naturalist Badge, says the Scouts Weekly News Bulletin, was found by the examiner stooping over a pond, intently studying the antics of a family of tadpoles. “Aren’t theywonderful, Sir,” said the Scout, and to think that in a few days every one of those ugly black things will turn into a beautiful butterfly. Did he get the badge? We wonder!
