FARM WORKING HOURS

THE FORTY HOUR WEEK BASIS DAIRY BOARD TAKING MATTER UP A point which has exercised the minds of the farming community more and more over the past year found popular ventilation at the meeting of the East Coast Dairy Association meeting in Whakatane last week, when the question of the 40-hour week was introduced by Mr Dodds of

the Te Puke Dairy Company. Mr A. J. Murdoch replied that the Dairy Board had received letters from all over New Zealand on the matter urging that something be done towards placing the farmers on the same basis as other workers. To do this literally would mean an increase of lOd per lb. on butterfat which was out of the question as far as overseas trading with old England was concerned. He felt that the only way to tackle it was through the labour award. It was the duty of the Board to get the utmost for the products of the industries overseas, and following that to make the most of the industrial conditions within the Dominion. He promised the meeting that the Board was doing everything possible to improve the position by means of increasing the guaranteed price and securing an adequate labour award for farmers.
