By special request the Edgecumbe boys of the Army, Navy and Air Force are preparing another nights entertainment for all dancing fans. Their first attempt the Kiwi Kan Kan dance proved a great success and an enjoyable time was had by all present. Arrangements have been made to make the A.N.A. Included in the programme are novelty dances, Monte Carlos, Army supper, while refreshments are available throughout the evening. The Premier Dance Band will be in attendance. Merchant Navy Appeal Day The Borough Council at its meeting last evening decided to grant the request of the Auckland Combined Sailors Societies for a street appeal day on behalf of the Merchant Navy on July 26 next.

As Many As Can Be Built “I have been informed by Cr Sullivan that in Whakatane we can get as many State houses as we can get builders to build them,” said His Worship the Mayor, at Monday’s meeting of the Borough Council. He went on to say that the Housing Department had practically given an open cheque for the erection of houses in this town.

Petrol Coupons for Easter

Private motorists would be able to redeem petrol coupons 9 and 10 any time between March and April, said the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan. This will help those who wish to travel at Easter. The Minister said that he had agreed to the interchangeability of the coupons as a result of requests to him by the Retail Motor Trade Association and the North Island Motor Union. He added that coupons 9 and 10 would be available at double face value for March and April.

Wainui Te Whara Stopbanks

A complaint was made to the Borough Council last evening that a resident in Anzac Avenue had‘fenced off a ‘V’ section of the land adjoining the Wainui Te Whara Stream and was grazing cattle which had broken down the recently erected stopbanks and caused considerable damage and flood risk. The Mayor stated that the Council had gone to considerable expense to deepen the stream and to build up the banks and residents in that locality should realise that any interference with the banks would react on themselves. He moved that the person responsible be notified to repair the damage and if this was ignored firmer steps be implimented. *
