SWIMMING SPORTS

WHAKATANE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL ! high standard achieved The annual swimming sports of -the secondary department of the Whakatane District High School were held at the Old Wharf recently. With bright sunshine and a good tide, conditions generally were good, though competitors found a cool northerly breeze rather unpleasant between events. A number of parents and ex-pupils who gathered to watch the races witnessed an interesting programme, while the boys artd girls on the wharf cheered their school mates lustily. The lack of a swimming bath made the conduct of the meeting difficult, and even the barge used last year was not available. Instead a dinghy was moored 25 yards from the wharf, and a rope from it to the shore. This made judging difficult, and turning very awkward for the swimmers. The lack of a diving board, too, restricted competitors to one plain dive. Thus the team which represents Whakatane at the interschools meeting at Te Puke will be at a distinct disadvantage alongside their rivals from Te Puke and Tau-

ranjga who enjoy the facilities of swimming baths for their training. The following are the results of the events:— CHAMPIONSHIPS 100yds Senior Boys: L. Goodall 1, G. Goodall 2, G.
