INTER-SCHOOL GAMES

CRICKET, TENNIS & SOFTBALL

WHAKATANE v TE PUKE

On Friday of last week teams from Te Puke District High School visited Whakatane to play the local pupils at cricket, tennis and softball. The weather was perfect for the occasion, and some very enjoyable games resulted. The cricket match was played on the Domain, where the very fast outfield made scoring rather easy. Winning the toss, the Whakatane captain sent the opposing team to the wicket. Harrison and Tapsell, the opening batsmen, gave their team a good start with scores of 14 and 36 respectively, but none of the others reached double figures, and the innings was declared closed at 77 runs for 8 wickets. Whakatane’s opening pair, L. and G. Goodall, also batted soundly, and both were dismissed by playing a ball on to the wicket, the latter after compiling 14. The only other Whakatane player to reach double figures was the captain, D. Carling, who made 10, though K. Carter, C. Goodwin and I. Law did well to keep their wickets up for a considerable period when their team was fighting rather desperately for a draw. This they managed to achieve, having scored 44 for the loss of 6 wickets when stumps were drawn. Bowling for Te Puke Tapsell took 3 wickets for 11 runs, while Goile for Whakatane took 5 for 16. Though Te Puke had the better of the draw, the Baker Cup which was at stake remains in Whakatane.

In tennis the Whakatane girls showed a definite superiority in winning 8 matches out of 9. The following are the results, Whakatane names being mentioned first: —J. Burke 7 beat J. Bird 1; M. Goodwin 7 beat H. Robertson 5; M. Gow. 7 beat O. Steel 1; P. Ferguson 7 beat G. Brown 5; A. Goodwin 7 beat H. Higginton 6; J. Hamill 7 beat L. Guy 2; J. Burke and M. Goodwin beat J. Bird and H. Robertson 7—o; M. Gow and P. Ferguson beat O. Seel and G. Brown 7—3; A. Goodwin and J. Hamill lost to B. Higginton and L. Guy 6—7. The Te Puke boys won their softball match by 15 points to 7, but the Whakatane girls had a rather easy win 44—3.
