After 21 years service with the Borough Council Miss Ruth Garaway’s resignation was accepted by the council with the utmost regret. Miss Garaway will be accepting another position in the town. The question Of making suitable arrangements for a farewell gesture was left in the hands of the Finance Committee.
Father I. Zanna, who for some years past has acted as priest to the Matata Catholic Mission, has been transferred to Henderson (Auckland). His position has been taken by Father Boyd, who is the returned Chaplain to the Maori Battalion. Father Zanna will be missed by a wide circle of friends in Whakatane and adjoiping districts. The resignation of Mr D. V. Saun-. ders as Town Clerk was received with the greatest regret by the Borough Council last Monday evening. Mr Saunders intimated that he would be resigning in May next for the purpose of taking up a position with a firm of building contractors in the town. The highest tributes to his ability as Town Clerk and his general efficiency were paid by His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) and Crs Shapley, Creeke, Armstrong, Sullivan, Morpeth, Warren, Good and Spring. Responding, Mr Saunders said that he had many regrets after 14 years of happy association and pleasant service with the Borough, in ' relinquishing his position but he had a horror of becoming an ‘old Fogie’ in office. He thanked the speakers warmly for their complimentary remarks.
