SCOUT RALLY

GALA DAY AT TAURANGA WHAKATANE DOES WELL * Well over three hundred Scouts and Cubs attended the annual District Rally for the Bay of Plenty at Tauranga last Saturday, when greater public interest than ever was evinced by the local community. The Mayor of Tauranga, Mr L. Wilkinson, in welcoming the visiting Scouters and Scouts emphasised the growing need for the brotherhood of Scouting in the world today and said that if the same spirit as envisaged by the founder, Lord Baden Powell, was more apparent amongst the nations war would be impossible. * Commissioner Southron from Thames Valley attended as guest of the local committee and from the Bay itself, Honorary Commissioner F. N. Christian, District Commissioners J. W. Roberts and N. Matthews, Sea Scout Training Commissioner S.

Miller and County Commissioner C. Kingsley-Smith also attended. A full day of keenly contested Scouting activities combined with a spectacular March Past and Inspection made for an attractive programme of which Lone Scouter Cliff Cavill had complete control as Rally Chief. A strong grounds committee ran off all events in a prompt and efficient manner while the public was kept well informed by means of a loud speaker. A feature of the Rally was the splendid performance of the newly initiated Thornton Group under Scoutmaster Don Scott. This troop after little -more than four months practice came second in the aggregate points beating old established troops and winning the warm congratulations of the District Execu-

tive. The Southern Cross Sea Scouts won the Fergus Boyd Cup for aggregrate points, the Whakatane Citizens the Tiki Trophy for Ambulance work, and also the McLeay Marching Cup for the March Past. In the Cub events, Tauranga won the Bowyer Shield with the two Whakatane Packs in close pursuit. It was pleasing to note the attendance of the newly-formed Thornton Pack under C.M. Kathleen Adams. A feature of the Cub events was the collection of native leaves submitted by the younger boys which drew warm praise from the judge. The.visiting Scouts and Cubs were billeted over the weekend in Tauranga and the Mount and following a Camp Fire programme in the evening and a Scout’s Own Service on Sunday morning spent the balance of Sunday on the beaches at Mount Maunganui.
