EDGECUMBE SPORTS

GOOD DISTRICT SUPPORT '■.HIGH STANDARD OF AXEMANSHIP

All roads led to the Edgecumbe Domain on Saturday, when the committee supporting Princess Kathleen, in the present R.S.A. Welfare .Memorial Appeal staged its Athletic and Axemens Sports Carnival. Favoured with fine weather, the event drew a large number of spectators

from surrounding districts, and -»surely none could have been disappointed, for the meeting proved to be one of the best it has been our pleasure to attend this season. Entries in both the athletic and ■ chopping events were high, and an

...excellent standard of competition resulted. Noteworthy in the former category was the Mile Open Handicap, in which Mexted, on virtual scratch, finished in first place in a brilliant fashion to the excited cheering of the large crowd lining the straight. The chopping was exceptionally

good. The 14” standing handicap was the big event of the day and was won by G. Stanaway. Once again the Baker Automatic Judging Machine left no doubt as to the placings.

Feature of the day, judging from the enthusiasm shown by the public, was the beer drinking competition. This was a contest in speed (not capacity) and took the form of relays between teams of six men. Two teams lined up, one either side of the table, with a glass of ambrosial liquid before each man. As the first man finished the second •commenced, and so on, the first team to finish entirely, winning. Thirteen teams altogether entered, the winners being Matahina, who established an unbeaten record of 27 seconds. Unfortunately the Dairy Company, for some unexplained reason, did not compete. Sideshows were plentiful, and the ■public supported them wholeheartedly. Once again Mr Freddie Burt < (‘The Voice’) kept up a running commentary on proceedings, and as usual, the public were well informed • on everything that was happening - on any part of the grounds.
