CARNIVAL CLIPPINGS

PARS AND OBSERVATIONS

(By “Rov. Rep.”)

Further to our Bright Idea: Princess Betty (Awakeri), whose committee is staging the Stock Drive could give an exhibition steer ride !

Princess Pam’s “Moonlight Picnic took place at Fivers Beach on Saturday night. There was no moon but that didn’t seem to hinder proceedings.

On the night of February 26 the ‘Sleeping liea. ii«-y Ballet’ will be presented at the Grand Theatre. (N.B. It is. the ballet which is expected to sleep, not the audience).

Princess Ellen benefited from the dance held in the Poroporo Hall on Saturday night. All came; Maori, Pakeha heap kai, heap hep, heap brave, ’heap squaw, all had heap swell time.

Princess Kathleen's Committee has organised a series of card evenings. These take place fortnightly in the Edgeeumbe Hall at 8 p.m. (All guns, knives, Colt 45’s etc. must be left at the door).

To Teko’s Monster Gymkhana to be held at the Te Teko Domain on February 23 will help swell the funds for Princess Ellen. A full programme includes, Chopping, Athletics and Horse Events,

The Taneatua Entertainm|nt Committee has arranged a series of dances and card evenings to raise cash for their Princess. A Monte Carlo competition is featured with a bag of bullion at the end of it.

Princess Ivy’s (Otakiri) last big night was February 16th when Otakiri steppers were well to the fore. Bright Idea: W*hy not let the Princess for whom any particular night is. sponsored give a solo turn as a further attraction.

Flash: Edgecumbe’s beer drinking competition (teams of six) comes off at the Sports Carnival at Holdsworth’s paddock on March 2nd. Edgecumbe’s battle song: “While Her Loyal Sons Are Marching Back To The Bar For More!”

We announce: Taneatua’s fancy— Princess Nancy !

At the moment dances ear to be by far the most popular method of ‘raising the wind’. One of the Edgeeumbe Kiwis’ (Princess Kathleen) most recent effort was a Kan Kan Dance (verra hygiene!)

A further small portion of money has dribbled in to the main committee but no exact figures are available yet. Each committee is playing a waiting game. (Little do they realise that their opponents are playing exactly the same game— Ho-ho-ho!)

There’s ‘scull’-duggery afoot. We knew it. It’s the Whakatane Rowing Club again, ‘pulling’ off another master ‘stroke.’ They’ve booked the Caledonian Hall for the night of February '2oth. (A. and P. Show Day) and intend throwing a Grand Dance t with all the proceeds going towards Princess Pam’s total.

Princess Nancy (Taneatua) has chosen the Taneatua colours her own, (We noticed a committeeman proudly flaunting black and white streamers the other day but thought lie was representing Scotch Whisky or Chequer Taxis or something. Didn’t dream of him representing Princess Nancy!)

The Te Teko Gymkhana Committee has arranged a Veterans Victory March Past as a feature of its Gymkhana to take place on Saturday next. Every returned man from any war is asked to take part in this. We understand Edgecumbe is parading some Boer War veterans. Taneatua claims an Indian Mutiny Man whilst one Te Tekoite swears he was in the fighting against Hone Heke. Rumour hath it that a Waterloo man resides in Whakatane and is competing. The committee ? reserves the right not to accept any soldier previous to the Wars of the Roses as genuine.
