CARNIVAL ATTRACTIONS
SLEEPING BEAUTY BALLET It is indeed seldom that Whakatane audiences are privileged ‘to attend a full length and properly cosi turned ballet in tlieir own town. In support of the R.S.A. Memorial Queen Carnival the Young Veterans Committee (Princess Pam) has arranged for an outside company to present the beautiful ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Ballet at the Grand Theatre at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26. Based on the enchanting old tale of the Sleeping Princess, the. ballet consists of four acts. Act I is entitled ‘The Christening Festivities.’ Amid great rejoicing, a daughter is born to the King and Queen of Vagonia. Widespread celebrations are held, but by accident, the wicked Fairy Felia is not invited, and oursting /in tells the frightened Queen that’the Princess will prick her finger upon a spindle and die. The Princess’ Guardian Fairy, tells the Queen that Princess Aurora will not die but live for 100 years. Act II is entitled ‘Aurora’s Birthday.’ Amid the celebrations ? the Princess pricks her finger on the wicked fairy’s spindle, and falls asleep. Act [II —‘The Vision’ concerns the coming of the Prince, and his search for the beautiful Princess. Act 4 ‘Aurora’s Wedding’ is the grand finale after the. Prince breaks the spell. The whole is an ambitious but brilliantly executed production and is worthy of a large and enthusiastic a udicncc.
