GOVERNMENT PROHIBITION ENFORCED.
BOARD ALLEGES FAVOURITISM
Following the Whakatane Harbour Board's approach to the Marine Department seeking the lifting of the ban prohibiting excursions to White Island, the following reply has been received through Mr VV. Sullivan M.P.; "Reference request Whakatane Harbour Board tor authority eater picnic excursions to White Island with vessel "Port Whakatane" regret regulations prohibit certification of vessel for this trip with picnickers. As pointed out in Department's letter to Board June 1940 Captain Carey is considered very competent masted but the vessel was not buijji
to the standard required of seagoing vessels. Position today is identical with that in 191.0." The Secretary, Mr C. G. Lucas } reported that he was advised by Mr Combs of the Whakatane Paper Mills that if the Board made application, the Marine Department would approve of Mr Lindsell and party being 'transported to White Island on 30-th January. Application was accordingly made and the following telegram received on the 29th January: "Permission granted "Port- Whakatane" carry six pasengers White Island during daylight and settled weather subject conditions mentioned my letter 23rd October 1940." A hire charge of £ls was made, of which £3 was. paid to Captain Carey and £1 lj)s to the A.B. The engineer was supplied by the party, at no cost to the Board.
Discussing the matter at last Friday's Harbour Board meeting,, members expressed some indignation that apparently authority could be given from Wellington to any person seeking a permit, yet such authority was refused the Board. Mr Mitchell P tntn,i that it was a well known fact that other launches far less seaworhy than the Port Whakatane were making the trip quite frequently. The Chairman (Mr. W. R. Boon): They take the risk, but in the event of an accident they would know all about it. The Board decided to re-submit the correspondence to the Minister asking him to give his decision in the matter further consideration. j
