ELECTION YEAR

PREPARING THE ROLLS BIG JOB BEING DONE The big job of preparing the rolls for the general eleetion to be held about the end of this year is well under way in the Bay of Plenty. At this stage it consists of a thorough and systematic purge of, the rolls for the existing but from these rolls will be built up the rolls for the substantially changed electorates which will emerge from the boundary revision now in progress .

On the last Electoral Roil there were 9-193. So far 8000 notices have been sent out and from replies to hand it would appear that there have been 702 removals from the district. On the, other hand there appears to have been quite a large number of new arrivals whose narnes will be added to the supplementary roll when it is drawn up. All electors are served with an ordinary letter asking them for details as to their status and place of residence. If-they fail to reply they are sent a second letter- by registered mail. If no reply is received to this, second contact they are autotatically struck off the roll and disanchised. of lf an elector has lost the card which has been sent to him, it would be sufficient for him to write to the registrar's office stating whether his address Avas the same or had been changed. The forthcoming elections (which have been tentatively fixed for November) arc highly important—in fact crucial for there can be no ■» doubt as to their being a testing ground for the public reaction to the recent Government enactions which have increased a basic social trend. If •% essential that every person desirous" of taking part, by exercising liis or her privilege and duty to vote, should see to it that they arc duly entered on the electors roll. The Returning Officer is Mr Martin Cole c/o Courthouse. Opotiki.
