Radio for Nursing Sisters
The question of supplying radio for the nursing sisters in the. Whai katane Hospital was discussed at the meeting of the Hospital Board last week. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and the seej rotary with authority to finalise.
Gifts to Hospital The following gifts to the local hospital during the month of January were acknowledged at last Thursday's Board meeting: Baby's clothes, W.D.F.U. Te Teko; nectarines, Mr Vickery; plums Mrs Withy; lcmon.s # Mrs Appleby; plums, Miss North and Mrs J. Roberts; magazines, Mrs Hambly n.
Automatic Judging
A feature of the chapping at the Te Teko Gymkhana to be held next Saturday -is the Baker Automatic Judging Machine which will be installed to judge the chopping events. So far as is known this is the first such machine to be used in the dls-l trict and spectators will have the. opportunity of seeing it operating.
Ohope Spotlight
Quite a number of our smarter set were seen in gay dancing mood on Saturday night when Freddie Burt gave out in terms of strict dance tempo. Seen tripping the light fantastic were Mr and Mrs R. G. Marsh and party including Mr and Mrs Fitzgerald (Gisborne); Mr and Mi's Nicholls and honeymooners Mr and Mrs Tocker (Wellington). Others included Dr. and Mrs Murray (Wellington);, Mr and Mrs J. Moffitt (Wellington); Mr and Mrs Williams (Matamata): Misses Margaret Miller, Eunice. Beveridge; Hazel Thomason; Leila Thomason; Doris Hackett; Cor leen Wiles } Knight and Wylie.
Popular Selections Throughout the afternoon at the Gymkhana held on Saturday in support of Princess Pain selections by both the Whakatane Boys' Band and the Pipe Band were very much enjoyed by the crowd, and served to enliven the proceedings.
Recent Waterfront Strike
Pending a decision from Wellington regarding the matter of the working of an extra gang mainly consisting of 'seagull' the local watcrsiders, who were out on strike recently *re continuing to work under the orders of the Northern Steam Ship Company's officials.
New Post Office Tests
Test soundings on the site of the new post office for Whakatane have been carried out by the P.W.D. over the past week. The- building which is estimated to cost in the vicinity of will be a twostoried structure of ferro concrete ? and is designed to house most of the Public Service officers now spread over the town in various buildings. The boring noAV proceeding is at least an indication of renewed Government activity after a long period of disinterestedness.
Upper Harbour Islands la response to a letter from the Whakatane Harbour Board the Minister of Grown Lands has stated that the islands on the upper harbour are not for sale and their use for the purpose of carrying stone, for the work of groyning was not deemed essential. The board has replied that two of the islands mentioned in the Denartment\s letter are non-existent and further that the board did not wish to purchase the remaining one but only -to construct a road across it from the existing groyne.
