GOERING’S TEARS
SCENES AT NUREMBERG SINGING OF ‘HOLY NIGHT’ With tears in his eyes, Goering sang “Holy Night” and said the Lord’s Prayer with 11 other Nazi leaders at a Christmas Eve service in the prison church at Nuremberg. Von Ribbentrop, Keitel, von ratb Sauvkel Doenitz, Sqjiaeht, Funk Frick, von Shirach and Fritsche were the others attending the Protestant service.
Assembled around a field altar lit with candles, the prisoners heard a Protestant chaplain, Captain Henry Gerecke say: “The real Christmas spirit lies within the. hearts of men who have accepted Christ as Saviour.”
The chaplain told the former Nazi chiefs how all round the world simple people were celebi’ating their first peace-time Christmas for seven years and gathering round the Christmas tree, the emblem of peace and goodwill toward men.
Captain Gerecke said that Goering at an earlier prison service was disappointed there was no organ. This time a field organ was installed, “I was greatly moved by the fervour and solemnity of his devotion,” said the chaplain.
