It is 100 years last month, since the first steamship arrived in New Zealand waters. She was H.M.S. Driver a paddle ship of 1058 tons, mounting six guns and rigged as a brig. She was an object of great interest to many oi the colonists and of amazement to the Maoris, who congregated in large numbers to see lor the first time a ship moving easily against wind and tide.
