First Steamship

It is 100 years last month, since the first steamship arrived in New Zealand waters. She was H.M.S. Driver a paddle ship of 1058 tons, mounting six guns and rigged as a brig. She was an object of great interest to many oi the colonists and of amazement to the Maoris, who congregated in large numbers to see lor the first time a ship moving easily against wind and tide.

It was from H.M.S. Driver, in July 1846, that Sir George Grey landed an armed party at Porirua to seize the Maori chief Te Rauparaha.
