WHAKATANE BOYS BAND Sir, —May I, Sir, make an appeal to the general public through your columns for subscriptions on behalf of the above Band. The appeal is to defray the expenses of sending seven representatives to Christchurch in order to compete •• ie Dominion Championships. These boys have given liberally of their iime for the entertainment of the public at various functions throughout the district and I feel sure that if tho matter is known ample funds will be forthcoming to send a ffcairtf south without depleting the funds / of the Band. Nothing too small or too large. Collectors: A. J. CANNING W. JARRETT and myself. Yours faithfully, H. WARREN*

Sir —Noticing the appeal in the Beacon by the Band Committee for funds to send some, of the boys to the ‘ contest I herewith enclose a cheque for £l/1/6 as a donation for same. In doing this I would like to say how much Mrs White and myself appreciated what the band and especially Mr Jarrett has done to bring Desmond along with his music. Hoping you will get the necessary funds and wishing the band every success.

■Yours etc

WHAKATANE HOSPITALITY . f Sir —Mother Nature has endeavoured to reduce me to a grease spot during the past two weeks and l am compelled to admit that ishe has almost succeeded in accomplishing her desires in this direction. Upon discovering that I was still more or less alive and kicking after her strenuous efforts she changed her form of attack and waged arid warfare against me. Flies, mosquitos and varied forms of tormenting ticklers bombarded and tortured me whilst I did my utmost to conceal myself undetr blankets, newspapers and magazines, I may just as well hSavo tried to ward off a squadnron of. Httn fighters single handed as check those linrele.nting insignificant? beaats. But although I have suffered the tortures of the damned in one respect 1 have enjoyed myself immensely in other ways. I feel it my duty tberefore to express my sincere appreciation for the hospital treatment afforded me during my stay in the Whakatane district. The people on the whole, or at least those whom I have been fortunate enough to meet have been extremely sociable and have done all in their power to make my stay a happy one. It> is to the citizens of Whakatane and surrounding districts that I dedicate this letter in an honest endeavour to let one and all know that I shall not forget their untiring efforts iu making, my holiday an enjoyable one. Until the sun goes out and all insects! decide to die. 9 ..Yours elc., JOHN L. UNELES.
