SALUTE THE MAORI BATTALION
THE home-coming of the men of the famed Maori Battalion is a signal occasion for Maori and Pakeha alike in this district, where the two races have so much in common and where we pride ourselves on a greater understanding of the problems which are widespread throughout the Dominion at the present time. From the settlements of the Rangitaiki, from the adjoining valleys of Waimana, Opouriao and Ruatoki; from the bush Pas of the Urewera and Tarawera country the fighting men who made up the Battalion have come. Little did they realise when first assembled that they were to win the admiration and affection of the whole world.for their gallantry in action and their prowess in the field. The perfect physique of the Maori, won approbation in England and inspired all units of the Middle: East with genuine admiration and pride. It was as fighting men however, that they won glory in Greece, in Crete, and all through the tortuous Libyan campaigns. Their name is forever associated with Takrouna, Cassino and Sangro. Today they are due to arrive home. Eighty will be marched in triumph to the Poroporo Pa at approximately 5.30 p.m. where they will be guests at a terrific home-coming. Tomorrow they will disperse to their respective homes there to relate firsthand stories of the far-off battles of World War II which to so many of us have been little more than news-reels and paper reports.
