EDGECUMBE BALL
QUEEN CARNIVAL FUNCTION
PRINCESSES PRESENTED
The Edgecuinbe Hall was the venue of a very successful ball held under the auspices of the Returned Services’ Association on Tuesday evening. Dancers attended from ali parts of the. district, and a well organised programme of modern and old-time dances was presented. Highlight ol‘ the evening was the presentation of the live Princesses representing Te Teko Otakiri, Aavakeri and Whakatane ’(2) to the latest to he announced, Princess Kathleen, of Edgecuinbe. A break having been called in the proceedings, Mr D. S. Radclifl'c gave, a short address on the work of the R.S.A. Committees, and the benefit which the organisation hoped to be in a position to afford to returning and 'returned men, and their dependants. Mr L. R. Brown, President of the R.S.A. also spoke, mentioning the manner in which it was hoped to collect the funds during the present drive, and the purposes to which they would be devoted.
Mr I. B. Gow, then escorted each Princess up to be presented to Princess Kathleen. Princess Ellen, of Te Teko,, looked charming in a check taffeta skirt and black blouse; Princess Ivy, of Otakiri,, chose a long frock of black material; Princess Betty, of Awakeri, was dressed in an attractive floral; Princess Beverley, of Whakatane, chose a floral frock with green background;, Princess Pam of Whakatane Avas dressed '9 9 in a pale green tafleta skirt with floral blouse, whilst Princess Kathsleen’s long frock of white silk was eminently suitable for the occasion.
The presentations completed, dancing continued under the control of Mr Ken Civil, as M.C. Tastefully decorated with native ferns, and national flags of New Zealand Great Britain and the United States the 9 interior of the hall was both attractive and appropriate. Mr Fred Burt and his Rhythm Boys supplied music the popularity of which was unmistakeable. The Edgccumbc Ladies’ Committee undertook in splendid 4‘ashion the titanic task of catering for the some 400 people present. A proper J?all supper was provided } and was cn a ,scale in keeping Avith the uniformly high standard set for the function. Claret Cup, AAdiich Avas also available between dances was a pollular refreshment.
An additional feature was the welcome home which was accorded to two district men Messrs. Reg Hall and Bob Ranby. Mr D. S. Radeliffe spoke, on behalf of those present, and Avished the men every success for the future. Both replied suitably. The whole function may he regarded as having been an outstand-
ing success and its popularity with the large number of patrons who attended is undoubted.
