CLARKE SHIELD CONTEST PARC)A v EDGECOMBE Tn a competition game played on the Whakatanc Domain at the weekend Paroa scored a first innings win over Edgecumbe by 84 runs. Edge-v cum bad first use of the wicket and opened with Campbell and Porter who were content to go along quietly neither batsmen taking any chances and 37 runs were put on before they were separated. The scoring quickened when Ducker and Wilson became associated and they took the score to 82 before Ducker was clean bowled by Smith. The remainder of the Edgecumbe team faired badly and they were all out for 120 runs’.
The bulk of the wickets were taken by Smith and Gill am who took 5 and 3 respectively.
Paroa opened with Martin and Gillam but only 8 runs had been scored when Martin was clean bowled by Ducker. T. Grant was next and was going nicely when lie got his leg in front and was out lbw. Goile and Gillam then became associated in a good partnership which took the score from 21 to 105 before Gillam was caught on the boundary in going for a hit. Gillam’s score of 53 included 7 boundaries. Goile who has been scoring well this sea,son also scored 53 before being bowled. 11. Grant and McGongan then livened tilings, up, McGongan hitting 20 runs off one over. Collins was tlie only other batsman to reach double figures and both he and H. Grant were going nicely when Paroa declared with 7 wickets down for 204 runs.
Edgecumbe opened their second innings 84 runs behind and one hour to bat. Paroa had a chance of an outright win, however, that they did not manage and when time was called they had five wickets down for 41 runs, leaving paroa the winners by 84 runs on the first innings. The outfield was very fast and the ground was in good order, apart from the approaches to the wicket which need attention very badly. ■ Scores:—
