Lure of North
“The main difficulty in the past year lias been t« prevent workers going to the north. Girls in parti-i cular have been bard to retain in local essential industries” said the Invercargill District Manpower Officer (Mr A. J. Peterson) ? replying •to a suggestion made at a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce that direction by the manpower authorities might be responsibly for the drift of population to *the north. Mr Peterson added that 92 men and 66 women had been directed north from the Invercargill district. Of ten girls who had gone from Invercargill to the North Island all/ but one were volunteers, and many who had left the city for various centres in the South Island were also volunteers. a
