AMATEUR ATHLETICS

WHAKATANE CLUB’S FIXTURE

INITIAL SPORTS SUCCESS The committee responsible for the .promotion of Saturday afternoon’s sports meeting under the auspices of the newly formed Whakatane Amateur Sports- Club, will have •every reason to be fully satisfied With the results. While the attendance could have been better the

standard of performance iu both flat and field events was excellent and competition throughout was keen. The club has discovered some performers of splendid calibre in the Dawson Brothers of Te Telco who thrilled the crowd with their free style of running in both short and long distance events. Taneatua was also to the fore in O. Glover and Hill both of whom discovered a fine, action over middle distances. Carling (Whakatane) and Mexted (Ota* kiri) also gave proriTise of. future prominence on the field.

Two Opotiki contestants, Oswald -and, Parkinson were., outstanding • and it is to be hoped they will continue to patronise the local club’s meetings. McGougan of Whakatane who has been recently demobilised from the Air Force also gave a good 'display in both sprint and field events. He appears to'be in the pink of condition.

The sports could be roughly divid- • ed into three sections men’s.—senior ;and junior and ladies. All events were post entry which tended to sslow the programme slightly but in spite of this handicapper, Mr Leo Ducker was well on the gob and there were no dull moments. The <club is to be warmly commended on the success of the first day which in itself will be, the best advertisement for subsequent meetings. Details of the placings were as under:— Running
