OBITUARY
PTE. W. H. NOWLAND Official word has been received by Mr Alfred Nowland, of Hamilton formerly of Whakatane, that his son Pte. William Henry D Coy 1 Sth Battalion died of pneumonia at the Widen Hospital, Bave'ria 5 Germany on the 7th April, 1945. Pte. Nowland went overseas with the Ist Echelon and was captured in Crete. He contracted pneumonia during the 500 mile trek through the snow at the latter part, of the war. He was one of the six brothers who were in the services (live of whom were overseas and the youngest L.A.C. Joseph Nowland in the Pacific) —Gnr. Samuel Now land ? Cpl. Murray Nowland -pte. Clifford Nowland, L.A.C. Joseph Nowland and Driver Ernest J. Nowland who was five years overseas and was mentioned in despatches for bravery during the African campaign.
