PINUS RADIATA
UTILISATION AS BUILDING TIMBER BOROUGH COUNCIL IN FAVOUR Seeking ihe Borough Council's opinion regarding the use oi Pinus Radiata in the construction of State .houses, the Building Controller •wrote 'last Monday evening pointing out ithe growing shortage of the na,tive timbers and suggesting that the pine might be utilised for aboveground framing. Cr Sul!'ivan speaking •to the subject said' that it was obvious that -something would have to be done to relieve the shortage of the New Zealand wojods. He understood that in Southland Pinus was used extensively in building with perfect success. He himself had seen a 281 year old house built of the same timber which had stood up well to the weather. The Dominion was fast com'ing to a stage i when Pinus Avould simply have to be used. He considered from bis own observations that pnv viding l;t was kiln-dried and dipped for borer there was no real reason why Pinus should not be used. Already ii was being used extensively for purposes other than building. Last year there were some milr lion feet cut in this country. The council decided to reply stating that providing the timber was properly treated it had no objec--tions fto its being used in State houses.
