Nauru Telegraphic Service Intimation has been received to the efTect that telegraphic service is noAV restored with Nauru, and that telegrams may be accepted at the rates shown in the guide. New Convenience Near Rock The Borough Council has dccidcd to proceed with the erection of a new public convenience at Pohaturoa Rock, south of the Native Rest Room. The estimated cost is £750 an,d ,an early start is anticipated. Sealing of James Street When it was announced that a further £500 could be made available for road scaling this year at last Monday's Borough Council meeting, Crs Armstrong and Shapley immediately put forward the claims of James Street. The Borough Foreman (Mr W. Henderson) mentioned that Landing Road and Francis Street was also needing attention. Cr Canning considered a foo l path more necessary than an actual road sealing' extension. The matter was finally left to the discretion of the chairman of the Works Committee and. the Engineer to arrange for the avocation of the money to the best advantage. Red Cross Stall The Red Cross Society will hold a stall on Frklay, December 21 in the section next to the Grand Theatre. Donations towards stocking it will be gratefully received. Money raised is for the Red Cross Society's General Purpose Fund( which includes an urgent appeal from the International Red Cross for destitute children in war ravaged countries, who need food, clothes and medical supplies; finance for Corso for a relief team for Greece (which is to include a local member —Mr Bruce Watts); and the Xmas comforts fund for the Whakatane Hospital. There are some excellent raffles, including dressed dolls, a pair ol blankets, a cake and home-made sweets, and it is hoped the public will gi've its usual generous support. Telegraphic Services Restored Advice has been received that telegrams of a business nature to Hongkong Malaya and Shanghai are no longer restricted to those ascertaining facts or exchanging information. Telegraphic service is now restored w'i'th Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and telegrams may be accepted for these places at same rates and conditions as to U.S.S.R. except business telegrams which are restricted to those ascertaining facts or exchanging information. Telegrams for Malaya (except Kedah Kelantan Trengganu) # may be accepted in English French or Dutch languages and' the following codes are admitted: ABC Sixth Edition Bentley's Complete Phrase j Bentleys Second Phrase, and Western Union. Telegrams to the. States of Kelantan and Trengganu (Malaya) may be accepted at rates shown in'the guide. Messages must be written in plain English language. Telegrams of' a business nature restricted to those ascertaining facts or seeking information.
Help Decorate Hospital As in the past the stall" of the Whakatane Hospital will decorate the wards for Christmas. The usual appeal goes out for (lowers and lycapodeum fern and those willing helpers who feel inclined to assist are asked to bring their greenery and blooms into the institution either on Sunday or Monday next. Who will come forward? Awakerl Mowte Carlo The final in the; Monte Carlo Waltz Competition for a prize of £t> whieb has created considerable interest, takes place on Saturday night next. Those still eligible are: Mr T. Bell and Miss Tyeman; Mr Bob Rae and Miss McKenzie; Mr and Mrs McDonald; Mr Hansen and Miss Sullivan; Mr Marsh and Miss Green; Mr Macintosh and Miss. Polsen. Any of tlie foregoing, unable to be present on Saturday are able to select a substitute to take their place. Whakatane Harbour Cargoes At the instigation of the Whakatane Harbour Board ? Mr E. H. Rhodes the new Chairman of Directors to the. Northern Steamship i Company, together with Mr E. Hewitt, the Company's new manager, will be visiting Whakatane next Wednesday (19ih) for the purpose of conferring with the Management of the Whakatane Paper Mills, the Rangitaiki Dairy Company, and othSr interested parties agitating for an. improvement in the shipping service to this port. Captain's Cabin —Ohope Now under new the Captain's Cabin, cabaret tea-rooms and seaside refreshment store at Ohope Beach bids fair to welcome the first peace-time. Christmas for six years in a thorough and fitting manner. Afternoon teas and luncheons served; dancing during the afternoons and evenings; and an abundance of cool refreshments and ices at all times —these are some of the new features which are offering. Over the holiday period dancing will take place every night. Ring 420R for all enquiries.* Cycle Stands At the Borough Council meeting last Monday the Foreman-Engineer reported with respect to additional accommodation for cycles in the business area, and stated that lie could see no' available additional space, lor this purpose. Increased use of existing space reserved for cycles could be effected by using welded iron stands which would accommodate cycles on both sides. Stands to hold 18 cycles would cost approximately £12. The council resolved that the Foreman-Engineer be given authority to construct and erect in the meantime, one of this type of cycle stand.
